It was a wild and blustery beginning to Spring down here in Melbourne. The wind was vicious, the temperature cold and the rain came down hard. There was even hail, lightening and thunder. Honestly, it was simply perfect for staying inside, keeping cozy and reading a good book!

Have you heard of E-Book Fairs? It’s a place for readers and authors alike. Readers get to discover new books, vote for their favourite, and review if they choose. Plus, every month there is an opportunity to win an Amazon gift card just by visiting and engaging with the current book fairs. Best of all, its free! Last month I talked about the best advice I ever received, which was to finish a draft. No matter how bad you think it is, just get the draft finished. Then you have something to work with. But what comes next?
The read through! Trust me, if you don’t edit as you go, and you just keep writing until you finish the draft, the read through is worth the wait. Sure, there will be mistakes and cringe-worthy parts, but there will also be fabulous paragraphs and dialogue that will make you go, ‘Wow, did I write that?’
As you read through your finished draft, keep a pen or highlighter handy, and perhaps some sticky notes or tabs, and make notes as you go. This will help make self-editing much easier. Which of course, is the next stage of the publishing process. Whether you’re aiming to self-publish or go traditional, you will need to edit your manuscript to the absolute best of your ability. Yes, there will be multiple read throughs, and updates. This is all part of the process. And it can take a long time. My advice is, once you do the first round of edits, set the manuscript aside for a week or two before reading it through again. It’s much better to come back to it with fresh eyes and mind. The longer you wait, the better. Perhaps read another book in-between. And remember, there’s no right or wrong to how many read-throughs you do, and how long it takes. Everyone works at their own pace. I’ll touch more on editing tips next month, and what works for me. But until then, take care.

Thanks, Danielle! This was just what I needed to here! FYI… Up here in Edmonton, Canada we are also having weird weather. For us it’s Fall but it has been going up to 27 deg. C: it should be in the teens! or no more than 20… We’re not used to this. I think I’m going to melt.
